New Opportunities in Trucking

"Opportunities don't happen, you create them." - Chris Grosser

How long are you going to sit around and wait for an opportunity to fall into your lap? Unless you've been under a rock, we know that the trucking industry is hanging us dry. I've had so much thrown at me in 2023 and I just continued to "Go with the flow". I thought I was being persistent, you know, staying the course. Not giving up- That's what you're supposed to do, right?

At some point, you have to make a conscience decision to pivot and create the opportunity, even if you have to create a new opportunity. What does that look like?

  • Go Back to the Basics

    • Think about what you did to get to where you were when life was good. You made a decision, you set goals and you put in the work.

  • Market Your Business

    • Treat your business like a business. Find various ways to market your business to get consistent and profitable opportunities. This could be a capability statement, door knocking, email marketing, hand delivered marketing items, etc. People don't know who you are and what you do until you tell or show them.

  • Hire Help When Needed

    • If you're driving on the road all day, it's going to be difficult to try to find new opportunities. You just can't do it all. I'm not speaking of a dispatcher- I'm speaking of a true professional to market your business for greater opportunities.

  • Network

    • Several owner operators have difficulty marketing their business because they're a one man (or woman) band. Imagine having a warehouse full of products that you need to be moved. Are you going to waste time to call each individual owner operator or are you going to call one person who has a network of owner operators or a fleet of trucks? This is why networking is important. Network with other owner operators who are interested in the lanes that you are looking to obtain. This way, when you reach out for direct opportunities, you can offer a fleet of vehicles to move freight, rather than just one truck.

I've literally hit the pavement myself finding new opportunities for not my own trucks, but new carriers that have come my way. Although we offer dispatch services at True Mile Logistics, it is always the goal to find contract opportunities for our clients.

You can continue to have faith, but without the work, it's dead. Put in the work to create your opportunities.
